Mobile taco stands, popular across Los Angeles and Southern California, face new regulations that could have them on the run.
Lunch wagons serving convenient and inexpensive fast-food are mainstays at locations such as construction sights and office parks, however, officials say they often cause traffic jams, in addition to getting under the skin of local residents who find them a nuisance. As a result of a sharp increase in complaints recently, L.A. has put plans in place to crack down on loitering lunch wagons.
Gloria Molina, Los Angeles County Supervisor, has introduced an ordinance that limits the amount of time a taco trucks can park in a single location with the hopes that the regulations will greatly reduce the chance for public safety issues. Under the ordinance violators could be charged with a misdemeanor, which in some cases might mean jail time. A 30-minute limit for mobile peddlers would be enforced in residential neighborhoods, and 60 minutes in commercial areas.
