Maine’s Signature Seafood May Soon Get “Green” Label
In a recent move the Maine lobster industry is seeking to gain a “green” environmental label that certifies the states most famous export as sustainable. Lobster fisherman and processing companies across the region hope to land the label from the London-based Marine Stewardship Council, which awards their blue ecolabel to companies that prove to be employing responsible fishing practices. So far 26 fisheries and almost 1,200 products carry the MSC label, which is sure to boost the standing of Maine lobster with consumers demanding more environmentally friendly food products.
Maine is the nation’s top lobster producers, putting roughly 80 percent of the nearly 100 million pounds of American lobster sold on the market. The state’s tight-knit lobster industry has long been praised for its business practices, which include an eye toward conservation and sustainability, and now wish to gain official recognition for their efforts. The $250 million a year industry has long enforced trap limits and rules that protect egg-bearing female lobsters, as well as lobsters that are too small or too big.
